Best Dog Collars

Everyday collars, martingale, and breakaway options for every dog.

Buying Guide

Every dog needs at least one collar for ID tags and licensing — even if you walk them on a harness. Flat buckle collars are the everyday standard. Martingale collars (also called limited-slip collars) tighten slightly when dogs pull, preventing escape without choking — they're ideal for sighthounds and dogs with narrow heads.

Material matters for durability and comfort. Nylon is affordable and comes in endless colors but can cause friction burns on active dogs. Biothane (coated webbing) is waterproof, doesn't hold odors, and is perfect for dogs who swim or get dirty often. Leather is classic and comfortable but requires maintenance.

The two-finger rule: you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. Tighter risks choking; looser and they can back out of it. Check collar fit weekly on growing puppies — they can outgrow a collar in days during growth spurts.

If It Barks Martingale Collar

💰 Best Budget
4.7

If you own a Greyhound, Whippet, or any narrow-headed breed that slips out of flat collars, stop shopping—this is your collar. The martingale loop tightens just enough to prevent escape without the harsh correction of a choke chain. The fact that they're handmade in the USA with genuinely beautiful fabric patterns is the cherry on top of an already excellent design.

Compare vs #2

Pros

  • Gentle tightening action prevents escape without choking or gagging
  • Handmade in the USA with high-quality nylon webbing and stitching
  • Gorgeous pattern selection you won't find on mass-produced collars

Cons

  • Not ideal for tie-out use since it tightens under sustained tension
  • Patterns can fade slightly after months of UV exposure and washing

GoTags Personalized Stainless Steel Slide-On Collar Tag

💰 Best Budget
4.6

We're done with dangling tags that jingle at 3 AM and get caught on crate wires. The GoTags slide-on sits flush against the collar, completely silent and virtually impossible to lose. The laser engraving is deep enough that we couldn't wear it off after months of testing, and the stainless steel still looks brand new after creek swims and mud rolls.

Compare vs #3

Pros

  • Slides directly onto collar so it never dangles, jingles, or snags
  • Deep laser engraving won't rub off like printed or stamped tags
  • Stainless steel construction resists rust even on water-loving dogs

Cons

  • Must remove collar to slide tag on—not a quick swap
  • Limited text space means you may need to abbreviate your phone number

Nylon collars are disposable. A good leather collar is an investment that actually improves over time, and the Mighty Paw delivers that experience at a price that undercuts most competitors by 30–50%. The full-grain hide develops character with every walk, and the hardware is solid enough that we trust it on strong pullers. Give it two weeks to break in and you'll never go back to synthetic.

Pros

  • Full-grain leather develops a rich patina and gets softer with age
  • Nickel-plated brass hardware resists rust and won't irritate skin
  • Classic aesthetic that looks sharp on every breed from Chihuahua to Mastiff

Cons

  • Requires occasional leather conditioner to prevent cracking in dry climates
