The four trackers most buyers actually shortlist. Filter by the spec that matters to you — subscription model, real-time tracking, battery life, dog size — and see which one fits your situation. Specs sourced from each manufacturer’s published product page.

How to pick

  • If your dog escapes regularly:Fi or Tractive. Both poll near real-time. Fi’s 90-day battery wins for hands-off ownership; Tractive’s 2–3 second LIVE Mode wins for active recovery.
  • If you want health metrics + GPS in one device:Whistle Health + GPS. Sleep, scratching, drinking, and activity tracking aren’t in Fi or Tractive.
  • If you want to skip subscriptions: Apple AirTag is the only tracker here with $0 ongoing cost. The catch: no real-time tracking — it relies on a passing iPhone to ping back location. Fine in cities, useless on a rural hike.
  • If your dog is under 25 lbs:Fi and Whistle both require ≥25 lb dogs. Tractive works down to 9 lbs; AirTag works at any weight (it’s 0.4 oz).
