Best Dog Car Seats & Safety

Booster seats, seat belt harnesses, and car barriers for safe road trips.

Buying Guide

An unrestrained dog in a car is dangerous for everyone. In a 30mph collision, a 60-lb dog hits the windshield or front seats with 2,700 pounds of force. Crash-tested car safety products are the only reliable option — and most products on Amazon are NOT crash-tested despite their marketing.

The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) is the independent organization that crash-tests pet travel products. Only a handful of harnesses have earned their certification: Sleepypod Clickit Sport, Kurgo Impact/Enhanced, and ZuGoPet Rocketeer. These are the only harnesses proven to restrain your dog in a crash. Everything else is a seatbelt that might work or might not.

Booster seats elevate small dogs so they can see out the window (which reduces car sickness) and include a tether attachment. Car barriers block dogs from climbing into the front seat and are good for SUVs and wagons. Neither replaces a crash-tested harness for actual crash protection, but they do prevent dangerous driver distractions.

Sleepypod Clickit Sport Crash-Tested Harness
Top Pick

Sleepypod Clickit Sport Crash-Tested Harness

👑 Premium Pick
4.4

The Sleepypod Clickit Sport is the only dog harness that passes the same crash tests as children's car seats, and that single fact makes the $75 price tag irrelevant if you care about your dog's safety. The three-point connection distributes forces across the chest rather than the neck, and independent testing by the Center for Pet Safety confirms it actually works — unlike the dozens of 'crash-tested' harnesses that aren't. This is the only car harness we recommend without caveats.

Compare vs #2

Pros

  • Only harness certified by CPS — passes child car seat crash tests
  • Three-point seatbelt-style connection system
  • Padded vest distributes crash forces across the chest
  • Also functions as a walking harness

Cons

  • Premium price compared to non-tested alternatives
  • Fitting and adjustment takes practice to get right

Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat
Runner Up

Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat

⭐ Best Value
4.3

The Kurgo Skybox turns car rides from a stressful mystery for small dogs into an exciting window-view adventure, and the internal steel frame keeps the booster from collapsing when they shift around. It's not crash-tested — no booster seat is — so pair it with a proper harness tethered to the built-in clip. For daily driving comfort, though, it's the booster seat that actually stays put.

Compare vs #3

Pros

  • Elevates small dogs for a window view during car rides
  • Internal steel frame provides structural stability
  • Removable, machine-washable liner
  • Built-in tether clips to harness for safety

Cons

  • Not crash-tested — safety is limited to containment
  • Only suitable for dogs under 30 lbs

PetSafe Happy Ride Metal Dog Barrier
Great Value

PetSafe Happy Ride Metal Dog Barrier

⭐ Best Value
4.4

For SUV owners, the PetSafe barrier is the simplest solution to the 'dog climbing into the front seat at 65 mph' problem. The tension-mount system installs in minutes without tools or drilling, and the wire mesh is strong enough to contain dogs that test boundaries. Check your vehicle's headrest-to-headrest width before ordering, because returns on this one are usually a fitment issue, not a quality issue.

Pros

  • Adjustable width fits most SUVs and crossovers
  • Wire mesh construction is sturdy yet see-through
  • No drilling required — tension-mount installation
  • Keeps dogs safely contained in the cargo area

Cons

  • Not universal — check vehicle compatibility first
  • Rattles on bumpy roads if not secured tightly

Adjustable Width

34-59 inches

Height

22.5 inches

Material

Coated wire mesh

Installation

Tension mount, no tools
